A 9-year-old girl was smothered with a pillow while staying inside her family’s new home. Seven years later, her aunt was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus a second life sentence.
On July 27, 2019, at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers responded to a home in the 4200 block of Eagle Drive in Mansfield, Texas, following a report of a child in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, officers found a 9-year-old girl unresponsive inside the home’s game room. She was transported to Mansfield Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The victim was identified as 9-year-old Melodi Sneed.
Family members had gathered at the home to help Melodi’s parents unpack after moving into the residence.
Melodi’s paternal aunt, Mercia Sneed, who was the sister of Melodi’s father, was staying at the family’s Mansfield home her 13-year-old son at the time.
After the other adults went to sleep, Melodi fell asleep on a couch in the game room.
According to testimony and court records, Sneed told her teenage son to leave the room before grabbing a pillow and getting on top of Melodi.
Her son later testified that although he could not see everything, he could see Melodi from the waist down and heard muffled screams.
Investigators said Sneed pressed the pillow over Melodi’s face for approximately two to three minutes as the child kicked, screamed and struggled.
When Melodi stopped moving, Sneed removed the pillow.
Authorities said Sneed then used peroxide to clean Melodi’s face, placed the pillow inside her vehicle and discarded the peroxide bottle in bushes outside the home.
She also told her 13-year-old son to never tell anyone about “her business.”
Hours later, Melodi was discovered unresponsive.
Sneed’s son told one of the responding officers that he had witnessed his mother smothering Melodi.
During an interview with investigators, Sneed admitted placing the pillow over Melodi’s face and demonstrated how she pressed her knuckles into the center of the pillow while holding it against the child.
On July 31, 2019, Sneed was arrested.
In the years that followed, Sneed spent substantial time at a state hospital after psychologists determined that she was incompetent to stand trial.
Her defense attorneys later argued that she was legally insane when she killed Melodi.
A psychologist retained by the state diagnosed Sneed with schizoaffective disorder, and evidence presented at trial showed that she had a history of delusions.
Prosecutors argued that Sneed nevertheless understood that killing Melodi was wrong, pointing to her efforts to clean the child’s face, conceal the pillow, discard the peroxide bottle and instruct her son not to tell anyone what she had done.
On August 13, 2026, a Tarrant County jury found 47-year-old Sneed guilty of capital murder and injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.
Prosecutors had waived the death penalty.
Sneed was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for capital murder.
The jury also sentenced her to a second life term for injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.
No motive for Melodi’s killing has ever been publicly established.
