A 61-year-old man was doing laundry when a masked gunman walked up behind him and shot him in the back of the head. Months later, detectives arrested the victim’s 23-year-old nephew and charged him with murder.

On February 23, 2026, officers responded to a laundromat in Jacksonville, Florida, after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died before receiving medical treatment.

The victim was identified as 61-year-old Roderick Crawford.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the laundromat and said Crawford was loading clothes into a dryer when a masked man approached and shot him in the back of the head.

Detectives later identified Crawford’s nephew, 23-year-old La’Darius Purdy, as the alleged gunman.

Authorities said Purdy was arrested on an active domestic battery warrant stemming from a separate incident in January.

On August 19, 2026, while Purdy was being held in the Duval County jail, homicide detectives brought him in for an interview regarding his uncle’s killing.

Following that interview, investigators arrested Purdy on charges of murder and tampering with evidence.

He remains in custody awaiting a court appearance.
