A Vulnerable Adult Was Left Strapped To A Toilet For An Hour. 2 Workers Are Charged.

A vulnerable adult was allegedly left strapped to a toilet for approximately an hour despite a leaking feeding tube and required five-minute checks. Two employees at a South Carolina care facility are now charged with neglect.

On May 20, 2026, a vulnerable adult at the Coastal Regional Center in Summerville, South Carolina, was allegedly left strapped to a toilet for approximately one hour while a gastrostomy tube was leaking.

According to an arrest warrant, 46-year-old Angela Rose Peterson, also known as Angela Poynter, was working as a registered nurse when she became aware that the resident was strapped to the toilet and that the resident’s G-tube was leaking.

Investigators said Peterson wrapped a towel around the tube in an attempt to stop the leak and continued administering medications.

Instead of immediately addressing the leaking tube, Peterson allegedly waited until the nurse working the next shift arrived approximately one hour later to help repair it.

During that time, the resident remained strapped to the toilet. The allegations were later corroborated through interviews, surveillance video and other information provided to investigators.

Investigators said 41-year-old Sherika Tamika Reid Myles was working as a direct support professional and was assigned to the group that included the victim.

According to a separate warrant, the resident was supposed to be checked every five minutes.

Investigators said Reid Myles failed to conduct the required checks and the resident was left alone for approximately one hour.

While still strapped to the toilet, the resident allegedly fell and was later found in a squatted position on the floor in front of the toilet, still strapped in.

The Coastal Regional Center is operated by South Carolina’s Office of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

At the facility’s request, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the allegations.

On August 11, 2026, Peterson and Reid Myles were each charged with neglect of a vulnerable adult. Both were booked into the Dorchester County Detention Center.

The case will be prosecuted by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
