Child Protective Services took into custody three children from an apartment in Houston, Texas where a toddler was abused, and later died in a hospital, at the hands of his uncle.
There were no relatives at the hospital when the toddler died.
The 3-year-old toddler died Sunday, days after he was hospitalized from injuries that led to a fractured jaw, brain swelling and extensive bruising.
Melvin Omar Morales-Gomez has been charged with causing injury to a child and is being held in Harris County Jail.
The toddler was last staying at Rancho Verde Apartments, at 6000 West Sunforest, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet on Monday.
He said CPS took three other children at the apartment, a 10-month-old girl and two boys, 3 and 6, into custody.
The children and their parents are related to the toddler, said Thomas Gilliland, public information officer with the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff also said the boy’s family has not been very cooperative, that the mother is believed to be out of the country and her whereabouts are unknown. Investigators have no information on the father, he added.
“In his final days, as he fought for his life, only my team was at his side, offering caring watch and support, as no family was there,” Gonzalez said.
Authorities are seeking information on the whereabouts of the child’s parents as well as any other information that could help in the case. Anyone with information should call the sheriff’s office Child Abuse Unit at 713-830-3250.
